9 reasons why you are not getting job interviews

These 9 reasons why you are not getting job interviews will help you overhaul your job application effort and start getting invitation for interviews. I know it can be frustrating when you do not get any job interview invitation after submitting your CV for many jobs. It feels like everyone hates you! The truth is they do not hate you, but you are doing something wrong. This is why I have put together this article to help you change this experience.  If you are not getting job interviews, then you are probably doing one of these:

1. You are using one CV for all applications

Lazy job seekers use one CV for all job applications. They are many job seekers committing this blunder. They seldom get interview invitation. One CV is not good for all job adverts even if the roles are similar. For each job advert, check the key words used by the employer and ensure that your CV contains at least four of those keywords. Look at other requirements, like language, travel needs and relocation. If these are required and you know you can afford them, include them specifically in your CV for that job. For each job application, adapt your CV to reflect the requirements.

2. Your CV Experience is irrelevant to the advertised job

Many just submit their CV to any job advertised, without considering the relevance of their CV experience to the advertised job. Someone with office assistance experience CV applying for an accountant job or teaching job is not likely to get an interview invite. Think about it. Before you submit your CV for a job, make sure it is relevant for the job to stand a chance of being invited for an interview. If your experiences are irrelevant for job and you need the job desperately, call the employment manager and explain your passion and experience and how it can be relevant for the job.

3. Work experiences does not show dates and duration

This is one of the reasons why your CV may end in the waste bin. Your previous experiences, which you choose to include in your CV must show the start and end date. A CV whose work experience section does not show dates and duration in the previous job roles will not appeal to the recruiter as a genuine CV. Everything will look fabricated and uncoordinated. Omitting the dates in your previous job role suggests that you are hiding some fact. Many make this mistake. Do not be one of them. Check your CV. If you want to get interview invitations, ensure that the start and end dates of your work experiences are included in your CV, starting from the most recent.

4. Too many wrong spellings, grammatical, punctuation and lexical errors

Before you submit your CV, do a spelling, punctuation and grammatical error check on it. It is a waste of time submitting a CV loaded with writing errors. Submitting a CV with writing error suggests that you are a careless person with poor writing skill. You will not get the invitation to interview that you are expecting. Do not be in a hurry; your CV is your first job for the employer. Do it well. Get a second eye to look at it.

5. Different font sizes/types in your CV

Always use one font type in your CV. Be consistent. If you are using Times New Roman, Arial or any font type of your choice, stick to it. When a CV has different font types and sizes, it is an indication that serious copy and paste work has being going on. It also shows that your are careless. The CV is not an original product of the person’s ability. It is a fabrication to meet the job description. You will hardly get a job interview.

6. You have non relevant job skills

Do not waste you time submitting your CV for a job that you do not have skills to demonstrate ability to do. Remember the employer does not know you. He/She will only assess you based on the content of your CV. If your CV shows experience related to administration, why submitting it for a core accountant role. A teaching CV can never be relevant for a nursing role. A mechanical engineering CV will not be relevant for a Civil Architect role. Skill development is a continuous effort required to prepare you for the job you want. If you want to switch job role to a completely different discipline, take time, plan, get some development courses in your new field before you start submitting CVs. Do not waste your time submitting CV for the Job your CV is not relevant for. You will not get an interview.

7. Incorrect or no contact details

This is the suicide rope. A CV without wrong or no phone numbers or email is on a suicide mission. It is dead on arrival. How can the employer get across contact you if your phone number or email is incorrect or missing? Before you submit your CV for any role, confirm the accuracy of the phone on the CV. Make sure that the number is active. If you lost your phone, retrieve it immediately. Check your email account regularly you are submitting CVs for job roles.

8. You are applying for closed jobs

Before you apply for a job, check for the closing date. Do not apply to an expired job. If the job does not have a closing date, it is probably a continuous running advert or a scam. Find the contact number in the advert and confirm from the recruiter that the job advert is still live. If you waste your time applying for an expired job, be sure you will not get an interview.

9. Spending short time in your previous jobs

If your CV shows that you spent only 3 – 6 months in your previous jobs over a 2-3 years period, then be sure that employers will be reluctant to invite you for an interview. Spending very short time in new job roles often give the impression that you are unstable and will not last in your job.
